Today's compilation:
Nite:Life 05 by Nick Holder 2001 Deep House
Well, last week I dove into the spectacular DJ-mixed version of Canadian Nick Holder's Nite:Life 05, a loungey and jazzy, early 2000s deep house excursion that, in my opinion, ranks up there as one of the single-greatest deep house mixes that's ever been compiled, period. Today, though, I'm back to evaluate the double-LP version of it, which is a little different from the far more accessible CD edition.
The biggest discrepancy between these two is that this version, as is totally standard for DJ mixes put out on vinyl, is not actually a DJ mix at all; because despite what its album cover might claim—"mixed by Nick Holder"—this particular release is completely unmixed, which means that you get fuller-length, uninterrupted versions of the songs that make this such a dynamite set in the first place 🤘.
So, rather than getting only 5:17 of Holder's own excellent "Beyond Your Dreams"—which draws a suddenly thick line of saxy haze satisfaction over a sensual, Brazilian-flavored shuffle—you get two extra minutes of it instead. And rather than getting only 5:24 of Richard Worth's totally atmospheric and sublime "Pikes Peaks Mix" of "Rise," you get almost a full extra five minutes of it here! 😌
But see, there's almost always a downside to these unmixed DJ mix LPs too; and it's that they hardly ever have enough room on them to include every song that was actually used in the DJ mix itself. Dance songs are simply too long for each one that was used in an hour-plus set to be included on a corresponding unmixed vinyl version of it, and so, while we thankfully have fuller-length versions of a majority of the bangers that are featured in this DJ mix, one that we're sorely missing here is New Music Movement's remix of Wam Kidz' "Maria," which is just such a phenomenal bop when it has the backbeat, the vocal, the keys, and a little, p-funky, siren-type synth sound all going simultaneously. Wam Kidz is one of many monikers that's been used by Atlanta's Chris Brann over the years. He's best known as Wamdue Project, whose Roy Malone remix of "King of My Castle" went internationally stratospheric between '99 and 2000, netting itself top-five chart placements all throughout Europe, a #1 in the UK, specifically, and a #1 on the US Billboard dance chart too. But this far less popular remix of a different song of his is on a whole different level, in my opinion.
So, definitely pros and cons to owning a release like this. Had this just come out as a standalone compilation with no mix to compare it to, I'd certainly only have good things to say about it, but knowing that there's a certain song that wasn't included, which is one of the mix's most impressive tunes, overall, I have no choice but to dock it a few points.
Still, though, the extra 5 minutes of "Rise" go a long way towards making up for what's missing here.
Highlights:
Sandi Flores - "El Ray" Jazzanova - "Fedime's Flight (Kyoto Jazz Massive Remix)" The Rurals - "That Feelin (Savannah Remix)" 6400 Crew Present DJ Joeski - "Hustlers Revenge" Nick Holder - "Beyond Your Dreams" Solar House - "Angel" Richard Worth - "Rise (Pikes Peaks Mix)"

ALBUM REVIEW: Mastodon – Hushed And Grim - Reprise Records
ALBUM REVIEW: Mastodon – Hushed And Grim – Reprise Records
Considering the progressive nature of Atlanta genre dodgers Mastodon, the only real surprise regarding the band’s choice to record an eighty-eight minute double album is that it’s taken them this long to do it in the first place. (more…)

Featured Poet: Nicholas A. Virgilio Edited by Alan Pizzarelli
Reading Nick’s letter now, years later, I can fully appreciate the truth of his words. The hard work ethic is especially relevant and essential to the seemingly simple poetic genre of haiku.
I first met Virgilio back in December of 1974, when we appeared on a television show in Philadelphia, along with Cor van den Heuvel, Bill Higginson and Virginia Brady Young to promote The Haiku Anthology. Later, back in our dressing room, Nick took me aside saying: “You know, you got a gift, kid. Stay with it and you’ll be one of our greatest poets.” “But, Nick,” I kidded, “I already am.”
Nicholas Anthony Virgilio was born at West Jersey Hospital in Camden, NJ on June 28, 1928, “under a full moon” he would later say. He attended Camden City Schools, graduating Camden High in 1946. He served in the US Navy for two years, and returned to Camden attending South Jersey College (now Rutgers University) and then Temple University under the GI Bill. He graduated from Temple University in 1952, and set out into a career in Radio and Sports Broadcasting.
He’s best known in South Jersey and Philadelphia as “Nickaphonic Nick who worked dances and radio gigs with Jerry Blavat in the 1950s. He began his haiku apprenticeship in 1963, after reading Kenneth Yasuda’s A Pepper Pod.
His first published haiku appeared in The American Haiku magazine in 1963. His most famous haiku:
Lily: out of the water… out of itself
served as a model for original English language haiku form by dropping the common 5-7-5 syllable count in favor of shorter forms. This poem is particularly unusual because the majority of what Virgilio wrote in those early years adhered to the 5-7-5 dictum then prevalent.
In 1971, he co-directed the First International Haiku Festival in Philadelphia. He helped establish the Walt Whitman Center for the Arts and Humanities in Camden, and was its Poet in Residence for five years.
After his Selected Haiku was first published in 1985, Virgilio was interviewed on NPR’s Morning Edition and later become a regular commentator on Weekend Edition Saturday aptly combining his love of haiku and his earlier radio experience.
Nick Virgilio died of congestive heart failure while taping a television interview for the CBS program Nightwatch on January 3, 1989. His well-known "Lily" haiku is engraved upon his gravestone at Harleigh Cemetery, near Whitman’s tomb in Camden.
Though his work has been designated as haiku through the years, among Virgilio’s poems are a number of excellent senryu inspired by urban life and the death of his brother Larry in the Vietnam War.
January 2009 marks the 20th year of Nick’s passing. On January 25, 2009, the Nick Virgilio Haiku Association paid a tribute to the life and work of Nick, hosted by Rutgers University, Camden, NJ.
Simply Haiku joins this tribute and salutes the senryu poetry of Nicholas Anthony Virgilio.
SENRYU
taking a hard look at myself from all angles — the men’s store mirrors
-
my spring love affair the old upright Remington wears a new ribbon
-
in the singles’ bar magnifying loneliness her thick eye glasses
-
my palsied mother pressing my forehead on hers this Ash Wednesday
-
Thanksgiving alone ordering eggs and toast in an undertone
-
alone on the road in the wake of the hearse dust on my shoes
-
Thanksgiving dinner placing the baby’s high chair In the empty space
-
telegram in hand the shadow of the marine darkens our screen door
-
My gold star mother and father hold each other and the folded flag.
-
my dead brother hearing his laugh in my laughter
-
adding father’s name to the family tombstone with room for my own

The Best Metal of 2017 (Part V: #2-1)
And so we end another year by counting down the best hard rock and metal we’ve encountered over the past 12 months. If we’re being honest, 2017 was a bit of a come-down after the staggering highs of 2016, which saw three of the Big 4 assert their continued vitality, to say nothing of career-best work by Katatonia and the Deftones. But the 2 best records of 2017 would be stellar in any year, and this year’s #1 is a precise and passionate barnburner that easily transcended the dreaded “supergroup” tag. So without further adieu...
2) Emperor of Sand, Mastodon: this wasn’t the Crack the Skye sequel many were hoping for, Mastodon instead tripling down on the accessibility of The Hunter and Once More ‘Round the Sun. That said, Brendan O’Brien emphasized the band’s interplay more than Mike Elizondo or Nick Raskulinecz, giving Emperor of Sand a warmer feel even as its lyrics offered an unflinching look at mortality. Brann Dailor’s vocals might be the catchiest of the lot, but his drumming remained intricate to the point of parody, and Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher riffed and soloed like a deranged Thin Lizzy. Mastodon has long since moved past Leviathan and “March of the Fire Ants”, but they remain the best major label metal act on the planet, and Emperor of Sand was arguably the big-ticket heavy metal record of 2017.
"Steambreather"
1) Pillar of Fire, Tau Cross: Rob “the Baron” Miller and Michel “Away” Langevin improved on Tau Cross’ self-titled debut with a thoughtful record that could best be described as progressive punk metal. Killing Joke remained the obvious reference point, but Tau Cross (particularly Away’s incredible drumming) became a worthy entity in its own right, transcending the supergroup label and blowing everyone away with songs that were both accessible and challenging, passionate and thought-provoking. Miller’s croaking and growling fused Jaz Coleman with Lemmy, while the band as a whole seemed permanently set on stun. Pillar of Fire was a killer record from top to bottom, pulverizing everything in its path with devastating rhythms, jackhammer riffing and intelligent lyrics, and fully justified Away’s time spent away from Voivod.
"Killing the King"

Today's mix:
Nite:Life 05 by Nick Holder 2001 Deep House / House / Future Jazz
Goddamn, this is far and away the best thing I've heard from this Nite:Life series so far, and legitimately one of the nicest deep house mixes I've probably ever heard in my life, period. Toronto native Nick Holder's been a terrific house producer since the mid-90s—see "Da Sambafrique" for just one example—and he also has a DJ career that dates back more than a decade further than that too. And with this Nite:Life release from 2001, he managed to lay down a fantastic set of jazz-infused goodness here.
Now, we all remember those glorious early-to-mid-2010s years when all that sax-laced deep house was seriously popping off, right? Bangers like Klingande's "Jubel" and such? Well, those years may have represented jazzy deep house's brightest moment in the sun, overall, but this stuff was going hard in the dance underground for a long time prior to that, and Holder here serves up a dope selection of some gems from 2000 and 2001, including a couple of his own, like the spectacular "Beyond Your Dreams," which draws this suddenly thick line of saxy haze satisfaction over a sensual, Brazilian-flavored shuffle 😌.
And you know who else is on here? Atlanta's Chris Brann, who is known best for that "King of My Castle" joint from the 90s as Wamdue Project, but here, he's got something called "Maria" as Wam Kidz, remixed by a duo called New Music Movement. And it's just fuckin' phenomenal when we've got the beat, the vocal, the keys, and this little p-funky siren-type synth sound all going simultaneously. Like, Jesus, dude; seriously, what a bop.
And truthfully, this mix really should've ended with the near-eight minutes of Solar House's excellent "Angel," which comes with a delightfully extended keyboard solo in its final third, but then Nick tacks on some unbeatable future jazz from Jazzanova too, who get remixed by Japanese duo Kyoto Jazz Massive on "Fedime's Flight." Tremendous song, but it has no real house qualities to it, so it doesn't really fit here, but I'm still by no means complaining about its inclusion.
So, a top-tier disc from the great Nick Holder here. Few things better in this world than jazzy deep house from around this time period in my book, and a whole lotta the tunes that ended up being chosen for this mix will show you why.
Listen to the full mix here.

Mastodon – Kvelertak - Mutoid Man: Live at UEA, Norwich
Mastodon – Kvelertak – Mutoid Man: Live at UEA, Norwich
People so often complain that a band isn’t playing their town on a tour. Every announcement is met with requests to play Billy from Stoke’s bedroom – though that would be sweet – and never satiates the audience size. Spare a thought for the people of Norwich who have had to go for years without seeing the glory of Mastodonin their city. As such, tonight’s event is packed out from the moment…

Record Store Day 2019 did not overwhelm me. In fact, I only picked up one album (Soccer Mommy) that day. This Mastodon 10″ album was on my I-will-buy-it-if-they-have-it-but-I-doubt-any-will-be-left-so-I-am-not-going-to-be-sad-that-I-did-not-get-it list.
On the Monday after Record Store Day, someone uploaded a vinyl rip of this album and I realized just how wrong I was; I knew that I absolutely must own it.
TO THE DISCOGS MACHINE!
Shout out to Guestroom Records in Louisville, KY for being one of the good guys and selling their Record Store Day leftovers online for the same price as in store.
In case you don’t know the story, Mastodon’s manager passed away and they played Stairway at his funeral. One of the guys from Gojira filmed it on his phone and encouraged the band to go into the studio to record a polished version of the song.
This record is incredible. Musically, Mastodon delivers a faithful rendition of Stairway to Heaven. This is not a band trying to take a classic and make it their own; I don’t have a problem with that idea, but this is one of those songs that should be left alone for the most part. There is no need to reinvent the wheel with this song.
Don’t get me wrong, Stairway to Nick John is appropriately heavy where it needs to be. This is Mastodon after all.
Vocally, this cover is fantastic. Brann Dailor is laid back and a little subdued at times in his approach to this classic and at no point during this song do you feel that it is just another rock n roll singer doing his Robert Plant impression.
Side B is the gem. Side B of Stairway to Nick John is the cell phone recording from the funeral. The audio is OK sounding, but it is not great. However, that is secondary.
There is a weight and a reverence in this recording; you can feel the heaviness that was in the air as these men honor the passing of their friend. It truly is extraordinary.
The crowd at the funeral seem to be stunned. At first, they don’t clap or cheer. But then, there is a slow realization of what they have just witnessed: A top-tier rock band paying their respects to a mentor and friend in a profoundly meaningful and touching way.
